Lithuania's ruling Social Democratic Party won the highest number of votes in the elections to local governments overall on Sunday, but are behind right-wing parties in the country's largest cities, according to preliminary election results published early on Monday.

Early voting in Lithuania's local elections started on Wednesday, allowing voters who will not be able to come to polling booths on Sunday to cast their ballots for candidates to municipal councils, mayors and one vacant seat in parliament.

On 20 December, the Council of the Labour Party confirmed the final list of their candidates in the direct mayoral elections. According to Vytautas Gapšys, head of the party's electoral staff, the Labour Party will be vying for 56 mayoral posts and expects to win more than 10 of them.
