NATO fighter jets stationed in the Baltic states as part of the NATO air policing mission were scrambled five times last week to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Two of the intercepted aircraft were reconnaissance and the other three were transport planes, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense said.

They were all flying without using the onboard transponder and keeping radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre, and some of them had no flight plan.

The NATO air policing mission is performed from Lithuania and Estonia.
