Germany is ready to head one of the four international NATO battalions, which will be established in the Baltic states and Poland, Germany's Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen stated on Tuesday.

"Germany is willing to take the role as one of the four framework countries," von der Leyen told journalists in Brussels ahead of the meeting of NATO defence ministers.

She did not confirm Germany's plans to head the battalion to be set up in Lithuania, but said the option was "being considered".
