Giedrius Misutis, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service (SBGS), confirmed to BNS on Friday that the woman, a Lithuanian citizen, had crossed the border from the Lithuanian side.
Belarus' border guards reported having detained the woman on Thursday, two days after the border violation was recorded by the SBGS, according to Misutis.
"The border violation was recorded back on February 15 by border guards from the Svencionys border station, and the Belarusians were immediately informed, but there was no reaction," the spokesman told BNS.
"The woman was seen walking along the border, then standing there, rather than going deeper into Belarus right away. Belarusian border guards were informed again, but there was no reaction again, and she went deeper into Belarus," he said.
On Friday, Belarus' State Border Committee reported the detention of the Lithuanian citizen on its Facebook page, saying that the woman had come to the neighboring country in search of better living conditions.
The SBGS had been regularly informing Belarus' border guards about the border violator since Tuesday, but no reaction came from the neighboring country until the media reported about the incident on Friday, according to Misutis.
