Oleksandr Tsariuchenko, 43, was on Friday sentenced by the region court in Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city, and will have to spend the first five years in prison and the rest of the term in a correction house, Judge Arunas Pastuolis announced.

He also awarded 11,400 euros in pecuniary damage from Tsariuchenko for damage done during a fire.

The prosecutor had asked the court to sentence Tsariuchenko for life.

Tsariuchenko killed two fellow nationals, including one in a helpless state, in a violent incident in August, 2018, and also attempted to kill a third persons in a way posing danger to the lives of other people.

The Ukrainian initially knifed to death one of his fellow nationals during a conflict in a yard of apartment buildings in Kaunas. The body was found in a children sand box.

Tsariuchenko then went to an apartment where Ukrainians lived and stabbed to death a sleeping former co-worker who was in a helpless state.

Later on, Tsariuchenko attempted to kill another co-worker and beat him up and stabbed but the man managed to lock himself in another room. Then Tsariuchenko tried to burn the apartment down and kill his fellow national this way.
