On Wednesday, volunteer students from the Faculty of Philology at Vilnius University started teaching Lithuanian to two groups of registered people.

"The language courses will help refugees to feel more comfortable in our country," Vilnius Vice Mayor Tomas Gulbinas said in a press release.

The courses will also offer an opportunity for Ukrainians "to get acquainted with the local culture and to establish new social contacts", he added.

According to Une Kaunaite, director at Vilnius Education Improvement Centre, volunteers with experience in teaching Lithuanian are invited to join the initiative as an increasing number of Ukrainians are registering for the courses.

The municipality says that both student volunteers and experienced teachers from Vilnius' adult schools will start teaching Lithuanian to additional groups next week.
