The former Cabinet discussed the acquisition of the vaccine back in November, but it failed to specify in the minutes of the meeting that the country would buy the number of vaccine doses it is entitled to on a pro-rata basis.

The Health Minister said this could have been due to "a technical error".

"Yesterday, we received the European Commission's request to confirm the final quantity (and (inform it) whether Lithuania will continue to adhere to the pro-rata principle and reserve 1.4 million doses," Health Minister Arunas Dulkys said during the Cabinet's meeting on Wednesday.

"We propose to adhere to the pro-rata principle, only this time to record this in the minutes," he added.

Lithuania has decided to purchase coronavirus vaccines from six developers: Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, Sanofi/GSK, BioNTech/Pfizer, and CureVac. The current plan is to buy around 7.8 million doses in total.

Lithuania has so far received two batches of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, a total of 20,475 dozes. The first batch was distributed among five hospitals, and the plan is to use the second batch for booster shots for medical workers who received the first vaccine doze.
