"We have informed that that we stand ready to assist, and we are just now waiting for the Estonian colleagues to indicate any specific needs we could help with," she told journalists at the parliament.

In her words, Lithuania would send a team of medics to Estonia but is now awaiting a response on how it could help. Simonyte also confirmed that Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis had left for Estonia.

"Perhaps we could send a team of medics or take any other steps but, first of all, we need to learn from the Estonians what they would need the most from us. We have informed them and we are ready to provide assistance," the head of government said.

The UK variant of the coronavirus is now spreading fast in Estonia as the country is set to go back into a strict lockdown on Thursday, with the country's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas calling the situation critical.

Records COVID-19 rates were recorded in Estonia last week. As of Tuesday, 1,308 new cases had been confirmed after 6,827 tests.
