“Discussions are accelerating as regards the upcoming presidential election of 2024. I reiterate once again that after the second term of office I withdrew from active politics. I will remain in the public sphere and will sometimes speak out on various relevant issues. Nobody can deny my right to have an opinion. I thank all my supporters for their understanding. Whereas all my haters, calm down and stop flinching,” Grybauskaitė wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.

Last week, the former president criticised the ruling political elite for its “inability to adopt strategic decisions in foreign politics”. According to her, after the European Commission published additional guidance on Kaliningrad transit, which allowed Russia to transport sanctioned goods by rail via Lithuania, all the government had to do was explain to everyone that the decision was adopted after conferring with partners and the Commission, “instead of clumsily hiding behind the Commission’s back.”

Meanwhile, Conservative leader and Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis responded to the statements by saying that the EU introduced additional restrictions on transit, which had not been imposed when Lithuania was represented at the European Council by “other people who now have plenty of opinions”.
