"The tentative date is September 8, but everything is still in motion. It will be a command element of the headquarters," he told BNS last week.

The minister confirmed that the part of the staff responsible for preparing for the deployment of other units was planned to be based in the central district of Jonava, but added that "the location of the deployment may change if necessary".

"There was talk of about half a hundred (personnel), but that number is still fluctuating," he said.

The German brigade is to be deployed to Lithuania after the leaders of the two countries agreed on that in June.

NATO has also confirmed its intention to upgrade to brigade level, if necessary, the multi-national battalions deployed to the Alliance's eastern flank in 2017 and later.

Lithuanian officials say the necessary infrastructure for the German brigade's full deployment in the country can be put in place by 2025.
