Currently, the Lithuanian Embassy is situated in rented premises which only partly satisfy diplomats' needs and are fairly costly.

"We now hardly fit in the exiting premises as the embassy' personnel almost doubled over the past five years, mainly because the number of special attachés is going up," Linas Linkevicius was quoted as saying in a statement sent to BNS Lithuania.

According to the ministry, Lithuania wants to have its embassy close to the embassies of other EU member states.

"Seeing how much trade with China is expanding and the interest of the business, science and culture sectors in this country is growing, we estimate that the needs will only growth further in the future," the minister said.

The ministry also stated that China remains one of Lithuania's key trade partners in Asia, with economic ties expanding fast.
