US import tariffs on Lithuanian dairy products will force exporters to look for new markets, the director of Pieno Centras, an association of Lithuania's three largest dairy groups, said on Friday, adding that an EU market surplus may drive down raw milk prices.
Lithuanian cheeses, yoghurts and other dairy products are now subject to a new 25-percent import tariff imposed by the United States, according to the US Federal Register.
In August 2014, Russia banned a number of imports from the EU. Lithuanian dairy producers were particularly hard-hit by the embargo. Two years later, some of them have found other markets, while others are struggling to replace former revenues.
In Lithuanian retail centres, a litre of milk can now often be bought for less than a litre of water. According to Lithuanian farmers, this has even led to livestock “emigration.”
Lithuania has received certificates from China, allowing the country's dairy producers to export their products to Asia's biggest market.
