Seimas speaker on Russian in schools: teaching material, not the subject, should change

Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen says that the teaching material of the Russian language should be adjusted to reflect the current situation in her response to recent suggestions to phase out Russian language teaching in schools.

“If a school community sees it as a meaningful thing, the Russian language should not be prohibited as an optional foreign language there. What surely needs to be changed, is the teaching material, how Russian is taught so that the material is relevant to the current situation,” Čmilytė-Nielsen told Žinių radijas on Wednesday.
