On Tuesday, Finance Minister Gintare Skaiste appointed Zvironas, the winner of the selection process for the job, as director-general of the Customs Department and granted him the rank of general of the internal service, the Finance Ministry said.

The new chief customs officer said in the press release that he sees Customs "as a state institution that supervises and promotes fair and open international trade and ensures the protection of the financial interests of the European Union and Lithuania in this field".

Zvironas' 14-year career in law-enforcement also includes the position of head of the Activity Coordination and Control Board of the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau.
