"Despite the size, it’s a city-state, Singapore is one of our largest economic partners in the region," Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said while introducing the committee to the idea.
In his words, Lithuania's exports to Singapore were valued almost the same as those to China in 2019 – 277 million euros and 216 million euros respectively.
Landsbergis also underlined that by opening its representation to Singapore, Lithuania would reduce its dependence on China.
"The government program includes one point – strategic diversification. That's the reduction of our economic and political dependence from on, although a very important, powerful state, in other words, from China," the minister told BNS.
Presidential adviser Dalia Tamosiuniene told the parliamentary committee President Gitanas Nauseda backs the idea of opening Lithuania's embassy in Singapore.
Lithuania plans to open its embassy in South Korea later this year.
