The presidential office has informed some lawmakers about such plans, three well-informed sources told BNS on Tuesday.

Representatives for the president and Simkus himself refused to comment when approached by BNS.

Under the Constitution, the president nominates a candidate to lead the Bank of Lithuania for parliamentary approval.

The term of the Bank of Lithuania's incumbent board chairman Vitas Vasiliauskas expires on April 7.

Simkus joined the central bank in 2002 and has been consistently going up the career ladder within the bank for the past 18 years. He was appointed a board member in September.
