Under the decree singed by President Gitanas Nauseda on Friday, Skvernelis will be substituted by Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas on Friday and by Finance Minister Vilius Sapoka on Monday and Tuesday.

Skvernelis announced in late August that he has lymphoma and would not be able to perform his duties on certain days when he would undergo treatment.

Tomas Berzinskas, spokesman for the prime minister, told BNS Lithuania that the prime minister is not working, acting upon doctors' orders.

"The prime minister has recently completed a full chemotherapy cycle and his body needs to get stronger and recover. Although all tests are goods, doctors have so far banned the prime minister from returning to work. Therefore, he will continue being on temporary sick leave until doctors will tell that he can go back to work," the prime minister's spokesman said.

"The prime minister thanks all people who take honest care of him and support him," Berzinskas added.
