"Over the past few years, we have adopted a lot of decisions that are unprecedented in EU member states. These issue are being discussed in many foreign countries. Experts and politicians are paying us visits and we are taking part in various EU expert task groups, where we are invited at the highest level, which means that they want the head to come and provide explanations," Vaitekūnas told BNS.

"I can't go, simply because I don't speak the EU's official foreign languages or I'm not fluent enough," he said. "I don't want to represent our authority and our state that way. I believe there are young people who can perfectly do the job."

Vaitekunas confirmed that he had handed in his resignation to the commission and forwarded it to Ramūnas Karbauskis, chairman of the parliament's Committee on Culture.

He said he was staying on as a member of the commission.

Vaitekūnas was appointed as LRTK chairman in 2013 and was in March 2015 reappointed for a new four-year term of office.

The LRTK head is appointed and dismissed by the Seimas on the recommendation of the head of the Committee on Culture.
