Lithuania marks on Tuesday 27 years since the death of Artūras Sakalauskas, a volunteer soldier who was killed in a clash with Soviet troops outside the parliament building in August 1991, thus becoming the last victim of the Soviet occupation.

Genovaitė Sakalauskienė, the mother of Sakalauskas, signatories to Lithuania's March 1990 independence declaration and members of the Seimas are expected to attend Tuesday's commemoration ceremony at a memorial stone marking the place where he was killed.

Another two Lithuanian volunteers were injured in the clash with troops from a special Soviet army unit who staged a provocation outside the Seimas building in Vilnius on August 21, 1991, the day when the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev collapsed.
