General Philip Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and Commander of US European Command, paid a short visit to Lithuania and said he has good understanding of the security situation in the Baltics. The general promised to do everything in his power to guarantee an appropriate response to any threat faced by a member state of NATO.

On Wednesday, General Breedlove met with Lithuania's National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas and Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas. The National Defence Ministry announced that the meeting addressed US security measures and the implementation of the NATO Readiness Action Plan in the Baltic region.

General Breedlove emphasised the necessity to continue strengthening security and ensuring stability in the Baltic region. He said the Alliance must continue to adapt to operate in the changed security environment and counter new threats.

In turn, National Defence Minister Olekas stated that long-term continuous presence of NATO forces, as well as deployment of weaponry and equipment, is the most effective measure ensuring the security of the Baltic States.

According to the minister, the goal is to achieve that NATO rotation forces deployed in the region would be increased to the size of a brigade or a battalion in each Baltic State.
