Speaking on Latvian radio, Asnāte Ziemele of the Lauku Celotajs (Country traveller) organization, said that Lithuanians were buying up property for rentals and recreation centres, particularly in the western regions of Latvia.
As a result, she said, Latvian entrepreneurs will have to compete not only with each other but also with the Lithuanians.
"Lithuanians in general have a more business-oriented approach," said Ziemele, explaining that Latvia's southern neighbours were more willing to take investment risks and more expert at promotion.
"At the moment, driving along Kurzeme, you can see plenty of signs advertising rentals in Lithuanian," she said
Even though Latvians and Lithuanians share many cultural affinities, rural tourism sites owned by Lithuanian entrepreneurs sometimes clash with Latvian architectural styles, according to Ziemele. She cites an example in the historic village of Koni.
