Ministers have been ordered to reduce their expenses by 5 percent next year and also cut the number of vice-ministers, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said after meeting with members of the opposition Liberal Movement political group in the Seimas on Tuesday.

"There's been an order given for every minister to cut their management costs by 5 percent and there's also a wish to reduce the number of vice-ministers as the Lithuania EU presidency is over," Butkevičius said.

He hopes the number of vice-ministers will be reduced over the course of this year.

After the Butkevičius government started working in 2012, the number of vice-ministers was increased by almost 10 as the country took over the rotating six-month EU presidency which ended on 31 December 2013.
