"52 foreigners now live at this center, compared to about 700 initially. There's no economic sense to keep such a number of staff," Giedrius Misutis, spokesman for the service, told BNS. "Just as the center in Medininkai was closed, so the one in Kybartai will also be closed as it was opened at the height of the migrant crisis."

The center's closure from March 1 will lead to the loss of 150 jobs.

Earlier this month, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said just over 200 migrants who had entered the country illegally from Belarus remained in Lithuania.

Last year, almost 4,200 migrants entered Lithuania illegally from Belarus, and most of them have since fled Lithuania after being allowed to move freely. Also, some of the irregular migrants have been returned to their countries of origin, while around 500 have been granted asylum in Lithuania.
