"There's a possibility that the peak of the pandemic has already passed but we are still in a complicated situation," he told journalists on Wednesday after the president's meeting with health experts.

Krepsta also underlined that any final conclusions could not be made yet and this assumption would need to be confirmed next week.

"With no doubt, we had a festive period that brings in that additional so-called data noise … as we had fewer tests done over the festive weeks and that led to a certain drop in new case numbers," he said.

The presidential adviser also underlined that there's "a long way" to any easing of the existing lockdown.

Member: we shouldn’t consider it victory

Mindaugas Stankunas, a professor from the Lithuanian of Health Sciences and a member of an expert council advising the president, told a press conference that more positive indicators of the spread of the pandemic allow making hopeful conclusions.

"The first thing we need to mention is that the lockdown measures have truly significantly reduced mobility of Lithuanian residents," he said.

A drop in residential mobility recorded over Christmas also extended into the first days of January, the professor said. "That's one of the positive signs that show that our situation can improve," he said.

Stankunas also believes that, taking into account the existing dynamics of new coronavirus cases, Lithuania has probably failed to reach the level of 4,000 cases per day.

There's also a "slight drop" in the share of positive rests, he said, adding that the virus spread rate is also slowing.

Stankunas stressed, however, that one should not think Lithuania has beat the virus. "I would like to underline very much that we would do the biggest mistake if we considered those small signs as our victory," he said.
