"Easter holidays have not gone by without consequences as beds reserved for COVID-19 patients are set to be filled in Vilnius hospitals today, and more than half of them are occupied by people under 65, therefore, we must step up heir vaccination," Lina Korizniene, director of administration at Vilnius Municipality, was quoted as saying in a statement released on Sunday.
In her words, increasingly younger people get the virus in Vilnius region, and the 55+ group includes a number of representatives of the priority groups, defined by professions and other criteria, who have not been vaccinated yet. They include teachers, law enforcement officers and shop assistants.
According to the municipality, over 5,700 people have been vaccinated in Vilnius over the past weekends. Some 55 percent of people over 65 are already vaccinated in the capital, and law enforcement officers doing contact work and people working in the trade sector and for strategic companies are being invited to get vaccinated as of the middle of this week.
Vilnius also started immunizing disabled people and their carers last Friday.
As of Sunday, some 477,368 had had the first doze of a coronavirus vaccine in Lithuania, and some 189,222 people had had two dozes.
Lithuania has so far received 717,245 vaccine dozes and has used 666,640 of them.
