This data reflects the climate change tendencies, climatologist Donatas Valiukas says.

"The record-warm winter reflects the climate change tendencies. All winter months were considerably warmer than usual multiannual norms. Moreover, it's important to take the whole context into account as the whole past year was record-warm," he told BNS on Monday.

The average winter temperature this past winter stood at 2.6 degrees centigrade, compared to the 1982-2010 average of minus 2.8 degrees centigrade. The climatic winter never really arrived, the climatologist said.

The lowest winter temperature in Lithuania stood at minus 8.9 degrees centigrade and was registered in Rokiskis on Feb 5. The highest temperature of 11.1 degrees centigrade was recorded in Marijampole on Dec 18.

"This past winter stood out not only in terms of high temperatures but also in terms of snowless days as there were only a few days through the whole three winter months when the ground was covered with snow, and that's the first such case through the whole history of meteorological observation," Valiukas said.

The coldest winter in Lithuania was in 1969-1970 when the average monthly temperature stood at minus 8.9 degrees centigrade.
