The number of people granted Lithuanian citizenship under the simplified procedure fell 60.2 percent to 37 in the first half of this year, from 93 during the same period last year.

No people were granted citizenship by way of exception this year.

The number of persons granted citizenship through naturalization also went down 62.6 percent to 58, from 155 a year ago.

The change was due to the fact that the Migration Department diverted its resources to focus on pending cases and assistance to Ukrainians.

"The Migration Department had a backlog of cases, and we prioritized the elimination of this backlog. Now the backlog is gone, and we are back to the normal routine of processing applications, and the department's resources have been devoted to war-affected Ukrainians who have come to Lithuania", the department told BNS.

Compared to the first half of 2021, there was a 48 percent drop in the number of persons whose Lithuanian citizenship was restored. There were 1,522 such persons in the first half of 2021, and the number went down to 792 in the first half of 2022.

The number of persons whose applications on regaining Lithuanian citizenship were rejected was also lower as it plunged 87.4 percent to 38, from 302 year-on-year.
