No new cases of the novel coronavirus infection have been diagnosed in Lithuania since the first one was confirmed last Friday, but the country must be prepared to deal with a potential outbreak, Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga said on Monday.

"There are no new cases in Lithuania, but we have to prepare ourselves and take all the necessary measures so as to be able to deal with these challenges should new cases emerge," he said at a news conference.

Fifteen people were tested for the coronavirus on Monday and the results came back negative, according to the Health Ministry.

Veryga said another seven tests had yet to be carried out.

Lithuania last Friday confirmed its first, and so far the only, case of coronavirus in a 39-year-old woman who had returned from Italy. The patient had mild symptoms and was isolated in a hospital in the northern city of Siauliai. She is in good health now.

When asked if the woman had recovered, Veryga said on Monday that two control tests had yet to be carried out.

"According to international recommendations, a patient is considered to have recovered when they twice test negative. A sample was taken today and will be tested. This is the first test. If nothing changes, we'll have to wait for that 24-hour interval and a second negative test," he said.

According to Veryga, the ministry's guidance on mass gatherings remains unchanged: there is no need to cancel them, but people are cautioned to assess the risks.

Globally, more than 89,000 cases of the COVID-19 infection have been reported, more than 3,00 people have died, and just over 45,000 have recovered.
