The Russian occupation of the city lasted until 28 March. Irpin was awarded the title of Hero City of Ukraine for the defence, its people’s heroism and valour.

The Lithuanian leader commended the Ukrainians for the determination to rebuild their cities and their lives, to rebuild their future, and to do it now, without waiting for the war to end. The president reaffirmed Lithuania’s readiness to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine.

“We welcome the recently introduced plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine, and we are pleased that Lithuanian experts were able to contribute to it. Our state institutions and the business community are already coordinating the necessary measures and needs. Certainly, working not only bilaterally, but also at the European Union and international level is essential. Among other things, I am confident that EU support for the reconstruction will contribute to further reforms as Ukraine embarks on the path of European integration,” the president stressed.

Irpin maintains close relations with the Lithuanian city of Alytus, the residents of which have received gratitude from the Mayor of Irpin, Aleksandr Markushin, for “extending a helping hand already in the first hours of the war to Irpin’s women, children and the elderly, who were seeking a safe haven in Europe. Lithuanians opened their homes to Ukrainian refugees and provided them with all the assistance they needed. In addition, at this difficult time for us, Irpin received a lot of humanitarian aid from Lithuanian friends and much needed medical vehicles.”
