“Thirty-two years ago, 14 freedom defenders lost their lives in the struggle for our country’s independence. We will never forget it. We will never stop thanking them and all those who showed unwavering determination and love for their homeland that night. Thanks to their will, today we are a free independent country,” the president wrote on his Facebook after attending the ceremony of lighting bonfires at the Vilnius Television Tower on the eve of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom.
