Lithuania’s figure skaters Povilas Vanagas and Margarita Drobiazko intend to participate in Swan Lake ballet on ice in Sochi, Russia. The show is organised by Tatiana Navka, former figure skater and the wife of Dmitry Peskov, who is the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Drobiazko, born in Moscow in 1971, was granted Lithuanian citizenship in 1992. As a couple, Drobiazko and Vanagas for decades represented Lithuania in Winter Olympics, World and European Championships and other events. They married in 2000.

However, Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs Stasys Šedbaras now says that Drobiazko might be stripped of her citizenship if she takes part in the event in Russia organised by Peskov’s wife amid the invasion of Ukraine.

The MP notes that an individual granted Lithuanian citizenship might lose it if the person’s actions contradict the key principles of the country.

According to the politician, participation in the show organised by the wife of “the Kremlin’s mouthpiece” would be sufficient grounds to begin discussions on whether Drobiazko should lose her citizenship.

“From the legal standpoint, I believe procedures should begin on stripping the citizenship. It was granted as a gift, whereas the gift may be taken back. I am in favour of considering this issue. If legal mechanisms are lacking, then they may be improved. Yet a person who obtains citizenship as a certain gift has to use it appropriately,” the Conservative MP told the news agency ELTA.

The politician suggested that the presidency should also address this issue.
