Gintare Ziukaite-Zelenkiene, head of the parliamentary speaker's office, confirmed this to BNS on Friday.

The parliamentarian would have turned 72 on Friday.

Glaveckas was elected to the Supreme Council–Reconstituent Seimas of Lithuania in 1990 and to the Seimas in 1996. He had since sat in the Seimas without interruption, working in the Committee on Budget and Finance, mostly as its chairman and deputy chairman.

The politician served as deputy chairman of the Lithuanian Center Union (LCS) between 1998 and 2000 and became its chairman in 2000. He was an initiator of his party's merger with the Lithuanian Liberal Union.

Following a split of the Liberal and Center Union, Glaveckas became a member of the Liberal Movement, but left the party's parliamentary group following last October's general election.

Born in Vilnius on April 30, 1949, he graduated from the city's Antanas Vienuolis Secondary School in 1967 and completed his studies at the Faculty of Industrial Economics at Vilnius University (VU) in 1972.

Glaveckas received his degree of Doctor of Economics at VU in 1976 and degree of Doctor Habilitatus of Economics at Tallinn University in 1987.

He did traineeships at Frankfurt am Main University, at New York University and the Budapest University of Economics.

Glaveckas was awarded the academic degree of professor in 1989.

The politician advised Lithuanian and foreign companies between 1992 and 1996. He co-founded the Lithuanian Free Market Institute in 1990 and served as chairman of the think-tank's council between 1992 and 1998.

Glaveckas was awarded the Cross of Commander of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas and the Medal of Independence of Lithuania.

He published over 300 research papers on market economy in Lithuania and abroad, and a number of books.
