President Gitanas Nauseda and First Lady Diana Nausediene presented the former president a bouquet of flowers at the presidential office.
“It’s never easy to choose suitable words of wishes to a person who has achieved everything in life. But the most admirable thing about you is that you have always stayed human in politics, preserved beautiful, human characteristics,” Nauseda said.
He expressed joy that Adamkus participated willingly in various events and continued to “devote himself to people”.
“I wish you to stay as strong and consistent to your principles as you are,” Nauseda said also wishing the former president happiness and inner peace.
Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte wished good health to the former state leader.
“I think it is very important and welcome that the president is with us and can often bring us joy or discipline us at times, bring the discourse back within the boundaries of ethics, Western culture. That characteristic, that support of His Excellency President is very important and I very much hope that President Adamkus will bring us this pleasure for many, many years to come,” she told reporters while congratulating Adamkus.
Vytautas Landsbergis, Lithuania's first post-independence leader, wished Adamkus a long time with his spouse Alma Adamkiene.
“Of course, I’d like to offer him the usual wishes: of course, as always good health, perseverance, good mood and to stay together with Mrs. Alma for a very long time,” Landsbergis said.
Adamkus served two terms as president of Lithuania, in 1998–2003 and 2004–2009. Lithuania concluded its EU membership negotiations and was invited to join NATO during his first five-year term.
