"That training is already underway, it is underway now, we are training a large group of soldiers to use these weapons, mainly anti-tank weapons we are using ourselves, and they also have them within their arsenal," he told reporters on Friday.

The duration of the training will depend on the weapon in question, he said, adding that training has been cut short and will last no longer than a week.

"This is certainly not a long-term course, certainly Ukraine and Ukrainian soldiers cannot afford in this situation the luxury of being able to go through a full course here, a full complex course, they are really introduced to the basics, there is a specially prepared program and as soon as they get the basics they go back and train their troops," Rupsys said.

"A week", he confirmed when asked how long the training might last.

The army does not disclose the exact number of Ukrainian soldiers undergoing training. Lithuania has been conducting such training since 2015 in both Ukraine and Lithuania, but following the Russian invasion started in February, Lithuania, like other NATO countries, withdrew its trainers from Ukraine.

Some Lithuanian troops were deployed in Ukraine to train local troops to use Stinger missile systems handed over by Lithuania. A total of around fifty instructors were deployed in Ukraine.
