Lithuania has proposed to the European Union to impose sanctions on Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill for supporting Russia's war in Ukraine, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis says, the 15min news website reported on Sunday when Orthodox Easter was celebrated.

"Yes. Such a proposal exists, but since discussions on a common position are underway, we don’t have definitive answers as to whether it will be possible to do so," the minister said.

He also pointed out that the authorities are involved in consultations on the separation of the Lithuanian Orthodox Church from Moscow's subordination, stressing, however, that the community will make the final decision.

"Discussions and consultations are ongoing, I know that (...). And also with the authorities, on how it would be viewed," Lithuania's top diplomat said.
