“This is difficult to predict, but we must nonetheless prepare for [gas supply] not being renewed,” Landsbergis told reporters in parliament on Tuesday.

“Countries that were much dependent, that had created dependency on this particular channel of gas supply, are already facing challenges. As far as I know, both diplomats and companies are working hard in order to compensate for that potential loss [of gas supply],” said the minister.

He stressed it was possible to find alternative gas suppliers. Landsbergis said he was helping Western European countries to find new suppliers and at a meeting with the foreign minister of Oman discussed the possibility that Oman would increase gas extraction volumes.

“I think if we find enough such helpers we can reduce risks that may potentially await us in the winter,” said Landsbergis.

Russia’s Gazprom in June significantly reduced gas supply to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, ostensibly because of a lacking turbine that was being repaired in Canada.
