Landsbergis was answering the opposition's questions as part of an interpellation procedure in the parliament

"My personal understanding is that any transit through Lithuania of Russian goods, sanctioned or non-sanctioned, runs counter to Lithuania's national security interests. As I am reading your questions now, I wonder whether you see it the same way," the minister said.

"And I want to ask you the question: do you want more transit (...) here?" he asked rhetorically.

The minister said he will be on the side "that wants less Russia in Lithuania".

"I understand that you are taking the other side," he said, referring to the opposition.

Saulius Skvernelis, the leader of the Democratic Union "For Lithuania" who spoke on behalf of the initiators of the interpellation, said that Lithuania's foreign policy has become unpredictable under the current government.

"Foreign policy has never seemed so unpredictable or dependent on personal or unilateral decisions of the foreign minister or the Foreign Ministry's officials," he said.

The MP also said that it is not clear what a value-based policy means, adding that the country's foreign policy should be guided first and foremost by its national interests.

The interpellation motion against the minister was initiated by the Democratic Union "For Lithuania" and other opposition groups in the parliament.

In the interpellation, the foreign minister was asked to give explanations regarding the developments surrounding the transit of sanctioned Russian goods via Lithuania to Kaliningrad and the circumstances related to the opening of the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania, and to answer questions about the diplomatic corps.

After Landsbergis completes answering the interpellation questions, the parliament will set up a special commission that will recommend whether or not to accept his answers.

Landsbergis is the fourth member of the current Cabinet to face an interpellation in the parliament. All three previous attempts to remove the ministers failed.
