The public broadcaster LRT's investigation division reported earlier that the US public sector renounced cameras produced by this company due to security loopholes. Kaunas residents are also concerned over the security of these cameras, the daily writes.

Edvardas Sileris, deputy commissioner general of Lithuania's police, told the Kauno Diena the concern is unfounded as personal data is and will be properly kept in police servers. Moreover, the majority of the new cameras in Kaunas will monitor traffic, not people's faces.

Audrius Stasiulaitis, PR head at Telia Lietuva which is installing the new cameras in Kaunas, told the daily that with the existence of the lowest price criteria for public procurement tenders, most often one can only offer Chinese products.

The installation of 240 CCTV cameras in Kaunas started last fall, BNS reminds. The cameras will be used to ensure public security, step up the investigation of incidents and reduce traffic jams.

The Kaunas municipality's CCTV contract with Telia Lietuva, worth 840,000 euros, will be in place for five years.
