"All of the blazes have been put out for now. The situation is under control but remains challenging," he said after meeting with Mindaugas Kanapickas, acting head of the Fire and Rescue Department.

Kanapickas said this week's fires had been caused by the warm and dry weather and the dry surface layer of soil.

"However, people's negligence and irresponsibility are a key element in these disasters," he added.

The authorities warn that forests remain highly flammable.

Fires have already burnt down 2,600 hectares of open areas across the country since the start of the year.

On Thursday, a major blaze tore through 14 buildings in Krakunai, a village in the eastern district of Salcininkai.

The Fire and Rescue Department said a total of 30 buildings had been destroyed in fires in Lithuania in the past two days.

Some 150 hectares of forests have been burnt down across the country this year, 15 times more than last year, according to the State Forestry Enterprise.
