New mayoral elections in the district would be held on October 10, the commission said.

Andrulis’ mandate was cancelled following the final judgment of the court convicting him of bribery.

He was removed from office pursuant to the Law on Elections to Municipal Councils, under which the powers of a municipal councillor should be discontinued prior to the expiration of his term of office if a court judgment of conviction became effective.

Earlier this week, Siauliai Regional Court upheld the ruling of its Kelme Chamber against Andrulis.

The former mayor, who had suspended his membership in the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, was convicted of demanding a bribe of 10,000 euros for favorable treatment as part of a municipal project for the maintenance of public spaces.

Andrulis was fined 25,000 euros and banned from holding public office for five years.

The convicted politician claimed that he had been followed the entire year and provoked to demand the bribe.
