The move comes amid mounting tensions in the region in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"An additional 70 Dutch troops are coming to Lithuania," Anusauskas told a press conference.

The Netherlands has also decided to supply weapons to Ukraine, according to the minister.

Germany, which leads the battalion in Lithuania, is completing the deployment of 350 more troops in the country this week, and Norway, also a contributor to the unit, has decided to send an additional 60 troops.

The NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group has been stationed in Lithuania since 2017.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday that the Alliance was deploying additional air capabilities and rapid response troops to bolster defenses on its eastern flank.

According to Anusauskas, it should become clear shortly what capabilities will be sent to Lithuania.

"It is a matter of hours or a day," he said.
