Statements by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia "matter less and less" to Belarus, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry's spokesman said on Monday after the three Baltic states imposed entry bans on President Alexander Lukashenko and 29 other high-ranking officials.

Attempts to put pressure on Belarus through sanctions have always had "the opposite effect", Anatoly Glaz said in a statement.

"We have thoroughly examined the statements by Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. After all, these are our neighboring countries, and, therefore, their opinion matters to us," the spokesman said.

"In light of the latest hasty steps, however, their opinion, unfortunately, matters less and less to us. And this is sad to acknowledge," he added.

Glaz said it was difficult to understand how the Baltic sanctions could support Belarus' sovereignty.

"The history of our independent state serves as eloquently proof that any attempts to influence Belarus through sanctions has always led their initiators only to the opposite effect," he said. "We are absolutely convinced that the decision made today by Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will be no exception."

Glaz also reiterated that Belarus would have to take retaliatory measures.

The Baltic countries announced national sanctions against the Lukashenko regime in response to alleged vote-rigging and a crackdown on peaceful protesters in the neighboring country.
