"There are no immediate plans to cancel Masses, especially in those village churches where smaller groups of people usually gather," Grusas said in a news conference at Vilnius Cathedral.

"(Let me) remind people to keep space, and priests and parishioners to air the churches. Masses will be held everywhere," he said.

According to the archbishop, the faithful will have the option to receive communion in their hands, rather than on the tongue, or spiritually.

Grusas also called on the faithful to take care of people around them, especially those who are at higher risk for the coronavirus: the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions.

The latter are advised against attending Masses and encouraged to watch services on TV or radio instead.

Earlier this month, the Lithuanian Bishops' Conference, decided to drain holy water fonts in churches and advised the faithful against kissing crosses and other relics.
