Eight Lithuanian border guards have to go into self-isolation after an Afghan migrant detained at the border with Belarus has tested positive for COVID-19, the State Border Guard Service said on Thursday.

Three men and a woman were detained near Vilekai, a village in the district of Ignalina, last Friday and got tested for the coronavirus. The Afghan person's result came back positive, it said in a press release.

The eight border guards wore protective gear both during the detention operation in Vilekai and in the detention premises in the town of Ignalina. Nevertheless, they will be tested for COVID-19 and will have to self-isolate.

The migrants applied for temporary territorial asylum in Lithuania. VSAT has launched an investigation and the Migration Department is processing their applications.

The detained foreign nationals have been isolated in municipal premises in Ignalina.

The other three detainees had Iraqi passports. Their tests came back negative, according to the press release.
