"This has never happened before. The previous records were beaten in many places yesterday and in all (meteorological stations) today," Vytautas Sakalauskas of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service told BNS on Sunday.

"If we look at the period of meteorological observations, temperatures had only risen to seven or eight degrees on January 1 – well, to nine degrees in Kybartai, and now temperatures are four, five, and in some places six degrees higher than ever before," he said.

The mercury hit 15 degrees in the southern towns of Marijampole and Druskininkai around noon on Sunday, exceeding the previous record for January 1, set at 8.8 degrees in Kybartai in 2018, according to Sakalauskas.

"Temperatures had never risen so high either in December or in January in the entire period of meteorological observations," he said.
