Latvia says 488 people have signed up for voluntary military service

In Latvia, 488 people have volunteered for military service, according to an official statement on Tuesday, after the government reintroduced the option in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The original plan was to recruit 300 young people.
The volunteers plan to begin their 11-month military training on 1 July, the Latvian Defence Ministry said.
