On 11 March 1990, Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union. March 11th is a national holiday in Lithuania, but there will be plenty of events throughout Lithuania for everyone – whether you're looking to celebrate the occasion or simply want something interesting to do.

VILNIUS – Independence celebrations

Seimas independence celebration program – 12:00 – 14:30
A flag-raising ceremony in front of the Seimas, carried out by the Lithuanian military, will be followed by a concert featuring numerous choirs, orchestras and performers. At the end of the event, an orchestral parade will march from Independence Square to Cathedral Square.

Sworn To Fight For Freedom exhibitions – 10:00 – 18:00
The Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania will be hosting a free temporary exhibition about Lithuanian partisan fighters, and its regular exhibitions will be free of charge as well.

KAUNAS – Independence celebrations

Ceremony and concert – 12:00
A ceremonial celebration and concert will be held by the Vytautas the Great war museum. The concert will feature G&G Sindikatas, Linas Adomaitis, Lietuvos Balsas finalist Rugilė Lingytė, and others

A concert at Žalgirio Arena featuring the Kaunas symphonic orchestra, Merūnas Vitulskis, Linas Adomaitis, Povilas Meškėla and 4 Roses.

Flag-raising ceremony – 13:00

Folk dance celebration – 16:00
A folk dance celebration at Žvejų Rūmai (Fishemen's Manor) in Klaipėda. Admission is €2, free for people wearing traditional Lithuanian folk dance costumes.

Rūgštynės electronic/rave music event – 11 March, 22:00
The event will be a multi-stage music concert featuring, acid, techno, dub, ambient and other types of electronic music. The concert will be located in a former meat processing plant.

The organisers of this event, Quick Art Studio, promise to teach attendees of all ages to paint a painting in one day. €89 price tag includes painting materials and painting that attendees can take home.
