The Lithuanian population has lost 1.1% or 32,700 people over the last year, preliminary estimates from Statistics Lithuania suggest. The primary reason for the negative growth is emigration.

On January 1, 2016, the population of Lithuania stood at 2.89 million. Net migration (difference between emigrants and immigrants) last year was about 22,900, accounting for 70% of the population loss.

Some 46,500 people declared they were leaving Lithuania in 2015. The number of people arriving to live in Lithuania was 23,600, almost 84%
