The Lithuanian population is forecast to decline at the fastest rate in the European Union to less than two million people by 2060, the European Commission said in a report published on Tuesday.

Decreases of the total population are projected for about half of the EU's member states.

The sharpest decline is expected in Lithuania, at minus 38 percent. If this grim forecast comes true, the country's population will shrink to 1.8 million within 45 years.
