The 79th anniversary of the liquidation of the capital's ghetto will be marked in Vilnius. The event will start at Rudninkai Square and then participants will walk to the railway station, take a train to Paneriai and continue the procession to the memorial there.

The event will be attended by Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, members of the government, foreign ambassadors residing in Lithuania, foreign guests and several hundred schoolchildren from Vilnius and other cities.

The organizers say the initiative invites all people of goodwill, but above all teachers and students, to remember the large Jewish communities in Lithuania that were destroyed during the Holocaust, and to walk together to the sites of mass killings along the roads that were used to take the Jews on their final journey. There are more than 200 such sites in Lithuania.

Some 195 000 Jews were killed in Lithuania during WWII.

According to the country's Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania, about 208,000 Jews lived in Lithuania before the war.
